Rheinmetall engaged with IR4 seeking to understand if it was possible to develop a fully automated boss welding solution that would account for the significant variability of their product as presented for processing in that particular stage of processing. Further, they wanted an Artificially Intelligent control platform that could adjust the boss placements based on interrogated 3D scan data to ensure that the variability of the part as presented was accounted for when placing and welding out the bosses. Finally they wanted to be able to make model changes and simply upload these changes without any requirement for reprogramming. IR4 delivered all of the above and more with the system also capable of providing fully automated metrology reports detailing the compliance of the placed bosses. It also provided an assessment of how much deviation there was in the part as presented for processing which could be used for upstream processing improvements.
